T-Bend Specification: Stop Ignoring This Parameter On Your PPAL Purchase Order

T-Bend in Pre-Painted Aluminum (PPAL) Procurement

T-Bend testing (ASTM D4145 [1]/ EN 13523-7) measures the flexibility and adhesion of organic coatings on pre-painted aluminum (PPAL) coils during cold forming. Defined as the minimum bend radius required to prevent coating cracking or tape pickup (loss of adhesion) when folded 180° back on itself, T-bend directly dictates a coil’s formability. Standard commercial specifications range from 0T to 3T: 0T represents a flat fold with zero internal bend radius (maximum severe deformation), while 3T indicates an internal radius three times the substrate thickness (3 × t). Specifying the incorrect T-bend value leads to micro-cracking, exposed aluminum substrate, loss of weatherability, and accelerated filiform corrosion [2]under outdoor exposure.

Why Omitted T-Bend Specs Cause Field Failures

When roll-forming machinery bends a PPAL sheet beyond its actual coating flexibility limit, micro-fissures open up along the apex of the bend, exposing the underlying chromate or phosphate pretreatment layer to atmospheric oxygen and moisture. In coastal and high-humidity industrial zones, chloride-laden moisture penetrates these micro-cracks and initiates filiform corrosion [2]

— worm-like thread corrosion propagating beneath the coating layer — which rapidly degrades edge adhesion and causes paint peeling along the seam lines of roof panels and architectural cassettes.

Worse, standard quality control tests conducted solely on flat, unformed PPAL samples (such as pencil hardness or impact testing) fail to reflect the mechanical stresses induced during profile forming. Without defining T-bend limits on the Purchase Order (PO), suppliers may deliver coils meeting flat adhesion criteria but entirely unsuited for tight-radius roll forming or architectural stamping.

Specifying T-Bend Requirements on Purchase Orders

To avoid field failures and ensure supplier accountability, incorporate explicit T-bend criteria directly into purchase orders and technical datasheets using standard engineering formats:

  • Specify Test Standard: Reference ASTM D4145 [1] or EN 13523-7 explicitly.
  • Define Maximum Acceptable T-Value: State maximum allowable bend (e.g., “T-Bend: ≤ 1.5T without cracking, ≤ 1.0T without tape pickup”).
  • Align with Forming Radii: Cross-reference internal forming tool radii with the chosen substrate gauge (t). For 0.8 mm paneling formed over a 0.8 mm die radius, mandate a maximum rating of 1T.
  • Mandate Environmental Verification: Require supplier Mill Test Certificates (MTC) to include post-bend corrosion resistance metrics (ASTM B117 salt spray testing [4] on pre-bent specimens).
